Alternator Whine Filter

Hello guys,
Ever since i removed my XM radio system from my car i get a whining noise from my CB. It only happens when i crank up my car. If i push the gas pedal the whining will briefly drop in frequency and will go back up in freq and stay there. When in TX or RX the noise is not heard. I disconnected the coax from the radio while it was running and the noise went away. I`ve been told by some that it is an antenna ground issue and by others that it is alternator whine. A local friend of mine suggested that i put a hot line filter between the battery and my radio on the positive line. I found a filter at a local electronics store.that is rated at 10 amps. Is this good enough or am i going in the wrong direction. I wanted to ask you guys before i start cutting into power lines and possibly messing up my system with a $8.00 filter. Any input and guidance will be greatly appreciated. THANKS

Your alternator may be the problem. Shorted diode.

A filter is worth a try, as long as your radio draws less then 10 amps your ok with the filter you referred to. Any of these will work great.

Magnum makes a darn good in-line filter as well. In the end though if the filter does not get it all then you know it's in your alternator.

My GMC Sonoma had a similar problem. I found that after installing a line filter the problem remained; I even went as far as adding a ground strap to my alternator and the block and frame. A lightning arrester in the ant. line will filter a little of it out, but in the long run you will end up doing some alternator work. turns out my alternator was going out anyways; it could not keep up the proper voltage. I verified the alternator by removing the exciter voltage from it---the little plug off to the side of the rear case. after removing the plug and running the truck off of batt the noise was gone......sorry about the length of the post

I have one of those noise choppers in my mobile it works but maybe a little to much, you have to crank the volume all the way up and your squelch off and RF gain all the way up to make out weak signals. it cuts out the engine noise but it can block weak and incoming signals as well. it works enough for me having it switched off and the signals are still amplified enough to make out. i took it apart to see what makes it tick it's a few resistors and diodes soldered to the switch, less than $3 in parts.

First you need to determine if the noise is coming through the antenna or the power wires. If it is coming through the power, a power filter usually does the trick. The antenna is a whole different game.
