This is a new Mod package that Sparky will be offering on a Cobra 25. If you like the Cobra 29 Stealth you will love this radio. The receive was one of the best as any that I have had over the years. On an average to quiet day there was next to no noise level. I found that most of the time I ran with the squelch off, I have had radio's where this would drive you nuts in five minutes. My best contact was an 18 mile mobile to mobile contact with a friend of mine in a tow truck. He was running a Galaxy 95T2 on a 4 foot fiberglass antenna. At 20 miles he said he lost me even though I could still hear him. I was barefoot with a Wilson 5000 mag mount. My first surprise was that the Sky Thumper coffin style replacement test mic sounded better then my Road King 56. This radio has Audio to burn and swings like a monster. I did alot of testing with a very pickey base station friend of mine. He noted numerous times on his meter 3-4 "S" units of swing. He next got out in the mobile to double check and again, plenty of foreward swing. Next up I had him run the radio on his base so I could hear it. I must say the on-air sound is very smooth and punchy. When he went to the D104 desk mic he was blowing some serious smoke, wow. With his 4 pill on he was locking down the channel on the north end of the city with ease. I just moved and I have not been able to locate my good watt meter. On a radio shack RMS meter I was seeing a 2 watt dead key and peak watts of 8. This is the same reading my Magnum Delta Force and a Galaxy 88 gave. Both those radios have peaked at 35-38 watts so I can ballpark it in at dual 1969 final power range. For the purpose of this test Sparky sent me the radio cold, all he said was we did a new package on it and tell me what you think. I give it two thumbs up, nice smooth punchy audio thats plenty loud but not blarring. Combine that with exellent receive and you have one cool radio. I did take a peak and noted a 520 mosfet final inside. Sparky will have to tell us what the bench numbers are. There was also a light talk-back which I also like. The new High Powered-RC Enhanced Cobra 25 is a winner. If your in the market for a hot Cobra 25 I would buy this one brand new ready to go. Do it right the first time and you never have to take the cover off again.

As far as distance, output, receive and clarity are concerned -- Two short questions: 1. Does it out perform the Cobra 29 Black Chrome HP? 2. Does it out perform the Cobra 29 Stealth? ---------- .."Free men do not ask permission to bear arms".. ..My wheelchair can go from 0 to 6 in 2.7 seconds.. ..I'm 'not' a total idiot yet - some parts are still on 'back-order'..

Great questions. I was wondering the same. In addition, are they available for sale now? ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

Thanks for the GREAT review Butcher! I'm glad you like it, and it's performing well. To answer a few questions...they will do just about the same power as the 29 Black Chrome HP and the Stealth. The modulation is just about equal. The RX is every bit as sensitive, but I think a just a tad more quite with regard to noise level. Power outout is just about 42 watts Bird at 14 Volts, from a 3 watt dead key. My thoughts on building this radio were a smaller footprint radio with the power to be heard with. They are available now, but not on the website...yet (What else is new!) They are available by calling us. With approx. 4-6 days to build. Sparky OWNER-PART TIME TECHNICIAN-FLOOR SWEEPER

Sparky, can the Instant Channel 9/19 switch be re-wired as a low/high deadkey switch. 2-watts on low and x-watts on high, without losing peak swing? ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

This Cobra 25 sounds like a great radio and I bet it'll be a super-seller... ---------- .."Free men do not ask permission to bear arms".. ..My wheelchair can go from 0 to 6 in 2.7 seconds.. ..I'm 'not' a total idiot yet - some parts are still on 'back-order'..

Thanks Sparky. I agree. With all these new cars/trucks that have such limited space, this is really going to be a hot item. One of these new High Powered-RC Enhanced Cobra 25's behind a nice 200/300 amp and you'll be talking for sure. I'm really interested in the receive aspect. We tend to not worry about receive and always focus on "how far will it get out". If you can hear the person who is hearing you, it doesn't do much good. I think you have a winner with this radio. ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

I forgot to ask. Can these same tweaks be applied to the 25 nightwatch unit, with the same end result in peformance as with the 25-ltd? ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

Bob P. You wont regret the new Cobra 25, I had one in my P.U. for 3 weeks with great sucess and took it out to put my 959 back in, I found the Cobba out talked and recieved the 959 , so put both in the truck and use the 959 for SSB and DX.....With or without the amp the cobra is a real performer. Good luck, you will enjoy it no end...lv480

Thanks lv! From Butcher's and your comments, and from talking to Sparky, I'm convinced that I made the right choice. I've been trying to decide since early July which radio to buy. First I thought I wanted the stock Cobra 25 LTD, then it was the Galaxy 919 or 979, then I was looking at Texas Ranger, etc. I was ready to order the Galaxy 919 when Butcher posted his review. Once I get the radio installed and tested, I'll post my own review in this thread.

Sounds good Bob, I'm sure you will be happy. Always good to have several radio's, SSB is fun and with the DX conditions getting ready to fire up a 979 would be great to have too.

I installed mine this past Sunday evening and it's a great talking and sounding radio, even on my 3-foot Wilson Silver Tip Flex antenna. I also bought the SkyThumper ST-65DX Noise Canceling Microphone. I'll post a little more about my experiences with this radio sometime over the weekend. (Posting this to "bump" the thread)

Thats very cool Bob. Which radio is Al doing this package to, the 25 LTD? My test radio was a 1995 Cobra 25 LTD weather radio and another members was actually a soundtracker. I am really impressed now if Al can get a Soundcrapper to talk like that, wow. I might have to stop being so hard on those radio's.

Yes, it's the 25 LTD. I'm glad I waited for a while before deciding on a radio. As I said earlier, I thought about getting the DX-919 (or 979) because it already had the 40W finals and, at the time, 40W finals were optional on the Cobra. But I really wanted the smaller footprint of the 25 LTD. Since I didn't want the talkback on all the time, Sparky wired it to the NB switch so I could turn it off. That keeps the NB on all the time, but that's the way I would normally run this radio. Sparky did a GREAT job on this radio! Gotta run. I'll try to post more info later this weekend.
